Accrington and District Golf club was formed in 1893, making it one of the oldest clubs in Lancashire.
The six founder members held a meeting in the courtroom and the first task was to find a suitable site for play. The original nine-hole golf course was situated overlooking the town on the top of the coppice, and built by Mr. James Birtwistle of Blackburn who had also constructed Wilpshire golf course
